Choosing the best balance bike for a 2 year old, has to be based on the size and weight of the bike. There has been a huge range of balance bikes appear in the UK over the last few years; it is not an easy task for the savviest of parents. There is a vast choice and a great difference in price and quality.
The first thing to check is that your child will fit. A balance bike is different from a pedal bike, most noticeably due to a lack of pedals. The feet need to be flat on the floor, and whilst seated, allow for a bend in the knee to accommodate the Strider action. Frame or wheel size is not as important as the stand over height and this crucial measurement will determine if the bike will work for your toddler.
Fit: The easiest way to measure a child's inside leg is to stand them against a wall. Place a flat object (e.g. a book) between their legs and measure from where it touches them directly to the floor. Providing this measurement is 27 cm or more, then they will fit on a STRIDER® 12" balance bike.
Some brands will still market their bikes at the 2-year-old despite the lowest seat position being 34cm or more and are therefore only suitable for an older child. Again look at the maximum height. A bike that only adjusts to 40 cm will not be able to grow with your child.
Weight: Striders are the lightest balance bikes, and with the 12 PRO weighing in a 2.4kg is the lightest Strider in the world. Weight matters, or more importantly the lack of it! If a balance bike for a 2-year-old, doesn't state weight, then you can be sure it is too heavy. Anything over 3 kg will be too heavy and put a child off riding it.
Longevity: Make sure that all spares and accessories are available. Cheap bikes frequently will have buckled wheels and bearings go, and if you can't obtain replacements then they are a waste of money. All our bikes have a 2-year warranty and every part is held in stock to enable you to refresh the bike ready for the next child.
Maintenance: Strider's are designed with cartridge sealed bearings and are simply indestructible. Often used by schools and cycling instructors, our bikes stand the test. Clamps can support multiple adjustments between children, wheels have additional support struts for strength, paint is powder coated to prevent scratches and flaking, and all welds are top quality. Our balance bikes work for as long as you need them too.
Terrain: Strider's are all-terrain vehicles. Gravel, concrete, mud, grass, slopes; a Strider bike takes everything in its stride. If you want your child to be able to explore wherever they wish then watch what you buy. A lot of wooden bikes are only designed for use on flat ground and even some metal bikes don't have the clearance to be able to go over bumps. Don't limit your child by the equipment provided. Instead buy a STRIDER and come racing, exploring and hang out with other riders.
Strider Balance Bikes are simply the best balance bike for a 2-year-old.
