How to measure a child to get the perfect helmet fit

The proper helmet fit is an important factor for safety and comfort. We always recommend that you start your child off in a helmet even on day 1 of using their balance bike. Whilst they may only be walking the bike around the house or grass, children need to learn the "No helmet then no bike rule from day 1". Leave it too late and they may never want to wear one at all.

The first thing to do is work out what size your child needs. Helmets need to be the right size - too big then they won't protect your child's head if they have an accident - too small and they are uncomfortable.

To measure

  • Get eye level with your child and look for the widest part of their head
  • Place the tape measure slightly above the ear and bring it across the mid forehead completely circling the head about 2- 3 cm above the eyebrows - you want to capture the widest part of their head
  • Take several measurements to make sure you have the largest size.
  • If you do not have a tape measure, use a string and measure it against a ruler.

Children's helmets that provide a great helmet fit

We carry leading brands such as Bell, Giro or Lazer. All are suitable for the age groups that we provide bikes for and have been selected as helmets the kids want to wear.

Bell Fraction helmets come in two sizes, X small (48 -53cm) or Small (51 -56cm). If your child is 50cm for example, then choose X small - don't be tempted to buy big. Its important that the helmet fits right today! We love the Fraction as it comes with three levels of padding and velcro's in place: easy to fit and comfortable and we like the way it protects low on the forehead and the back of the head.

Bell One Step Helmets are brilliant for our smallest riders. With flashing lights the little ones love them and they are also a range that goes to 46cm for tiny head circumferences.

Lazer are one of the oldest manufacturers around and make brilliant quality helmets. The MIPS protection system we believe to be the safest around, making these a worthwhile investment in protecting your child's brain. Our own two children wear these!
